17 August in 1999, Turkey woke up
by fatal shock at 03:02 a.m, the time that the quake hit. I was
just 15 years old. When Quake hit us, We
were sleeping. First, We heard a voice
which very strange after that building was begun shaking. Althoug our house became
two-storied, we were shaking so much. İt almost had contiuned 45 second but we
thought it never stop. I was hearing some screams in out. As soon as the shaking stopped , we went int
out right now. Everyone was screaming , running , crying. thousands of people
fled into the streets in panic. Actually we couldnt understand matter of quake
right now because not so much damage in my district. Everyone was trying to
call their relatives or friends but they couldnt because A significant contributing factor was the
disruption to the telecommunications infrastructure. All the phone lines were
overloaded; even the mobile phones were not working. Everyone worried about it. I just sat on
sidewalk and was watching people such as movie. My father found a safe place
for us and he went because he was journalist and he was working. We found a
radio and after that we started to find out all the facts about eartquake.
When we turned on the radio,
Mayor of İzmit was talking "There
are many people under the rubble, People are in agony. We can hear their
screams for help." we were shocked
! because We never think this kind
disaster. The moment magnitude 7.4 Kocaeli, Turkey, earthquake struck the
Kocaeli province of northwestern Turkey and İt influenced istanbul too.
A city
collapsed in 45 second
We sat in out all night, Just listened radio. İt was most important things
that time. Because People were so much anxious. İf they couldnt have
news from radio or come to know something about eartquake, They might be
mad. When we heard news about eartquake,
we were amazed. Such as a person was dying every minute. Because casualties always
was getting increase.
Thousands died and thousands more
were wounded. People lost their lives, homes, livelihoods and dreams. Yes all of them collepsed in 45 second.
İs there anyone heard my voice ?
The day after, We still were in out. Because authorities always were warning
that not go include to building. People had moved their television to out and
watching on the street. There were many people everywhere. We were watching tv
too. rescue teams, armies, civil defense teams were working for find to people
under dent. Because Most of the victims were buried while they slept by
the collapse of poorly constructed apartment buildings and homes. Over 110,000
buildings collapsed during the earthquake.
Rescue teams always called to under dent that ‘ İs there anyone
heard my voice ? ’ Because they had expected
a voice , a human voice. Because there was not so much electronic scanner due
to that they were using this way. İf they heard a voice, they were digging
there .
Major
disaster
Almost 10-15 days later, Everything begun to emerge. The official death toll exceeds 18000 but
unofficial death toll is much higher than that. Sixteen thousand are reported injured and some ten thousand are
missing. The quake struck a heavily populated region encompassing the major
cities of Istanbul and Izmit. Worst hit was the city of Izmit located near the
epicenter,
In the wake of this earthquake,
many national and international communities offered help and assistance.
However, it rapidly became apparent that one of the main obstacles to
efficiency in conducting the rescue operation was the lack of coordination in
the earthquake region. Because there
was chaos. Everyone wants do something. İt got harm the process.
After earthquake nearly 25 milion of the population had been affected from
this disaster. Thousands people
became homeless. Tent cities was created. Many people lost their family. It was
most significant trauma for Turkey But unfourtinately people have forgetten
them already.
Even we have forgotten , we know that ‘45 second changed Turkey’s fate.’
